New Peanut Production Estimation in Argentina by BCCBA – July 2018

Peanut season 2017/2018: Estimates indicate a drop of in-shell peanut production at 19.3% compared with the historical average for the last 8 seasons.

In the peanut-growing area, including the provinces of Córdoba, San Luis, La Pampa and Buenos Aires, estimates indicate in-shell production at 842,600 tons and unshelled production at 485,800 tons. Harvest has been completed by 87%.
Córdoba, which accounts for 91% of the total area, features in-shell production amounting to 752,200 tons, 36% less than the previous year, while unshelled production is 485,800 tons, 41% less than the previous season.

Peanut Production. Season 2017/2018.

Peanut is the crop with the greatest reduction compared with the previous season. This is due to the drought that affected the area in the early months of the year, and the effects of the heavy rainfall in the first half of May, which caused shells to open in dug lots and subsequent budding of kernels. Since the harvest has been completed by 87%, in-shell yield reduction has been estimated at 42%, averaging 23.2 qq/ha for the peanut-growing area, including the provinces of Córdoba (90%), San Luis (6%), La Pampa (3%) and Buenos Aires (1%).

Total production in the four relevant provinces amounts to 842,600 tons of in-shell peanuts and 536,400 tons of unshelled peanuts. In both cases, it is less than the yield in season 2016/2017. This is due to the loss of in-shell yield, 42% less than the previous year. According to an individual analysis by province, said value is 31.5 qq/ha in Buenos Aires, 35 qq/ha in La Pampa, 24.3 qq/ha in San Luis and 22.9 qq/ha in Córdoba.

In the province of Buenos Aires, in-shell production has been estimated at 4,300 tons and unshelled production at 2,900 tons, the unshelled peanut/in-shell peanut ratio being 67%. The planted area is 1,350 hectares and the in-shell yield is expected to reach 31.5 qq/ha.
In Córdoba, in-shell production stands at 752,200 tons, 36% less than the previous year, while unshelled production is 485,800 tons. The average weighted in-shell yield is 22.9 qq/ha, 42% less than the previous season. The drought in the course of the crop cycle caused low kernel weight and lack of pegs and/or pegs without kernels. The lowest yields were reported in the departments of Río Primero (10 qq/ha), Santa María (12 qq/ha) and Gral. San Martín (18 qq/ha), between 14 and 24 qq/ha less than the historical average (2007/2017) in said departments.

The harvest completion rate in the first half of July is 87%, 13 points less than a normal season with favorable harvest conditions like season 2014/2015; 47,000 hectares remain to be threshed.

In reference to quality, reports indicate the presence of peanut smut (Thecaphora frezii), root rotting (Fusarium solani) and aflatoxin (Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus), although less than the assessment at the start of harvest tasks.

Climatic context during harvest

Province of Córdoba: Córdoba extends across 91% of the overall peanut-growing area. In May, the harvest faced setbacks due to precipitation above the historical average (up to 100 mm more in some areas). In June, conditions for the peanut harvest were favorable, since the monthly accumulated precipitation was similar to the historical average, with values ranging from 10 mm (Pte. R. S. Peña and towards the south of the departments of Río Cuarto and Juárez Celman) to 50 mm (Department of Gral. Roca).

The untimely rainfall this year was material in the delay of threshing activities beyond expectations for a normal year. Consequently, production estimates may be subject to reassessment.
This report was developed jointly with Collaborators in all the provinces, who provided data on their areas during the survey conducted by the Grain Exchange of Córdoba in the course of July 2018.
